CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

For families who have waited weeks and months for help to buy food, relief is here.

Facing a deadline from Washington, North Carolina has put efforts to catch up on food stamp application on the fast track.

The state has until Monday morning to get those applications processed.

The Department of Health and Human Services says that state and county workers will work through the weekend in an effort to meet the federal government's fast approaching deadline.

DHHS say it plans to process all applications and recertifications pending over 90 days, and all expedited applications older than 7 days. The agency says the bulk of the pending cases are in Wake, Forsyth, Cumberland, Pitt and Mecklenburg Counties.
