Stakeholders present plans for a multi-use sports facility in Franklin

Charles Mitchell has big plans for his sprawling piece of land in Franklin. He currently spends his time helping young football players grow into mature, talented athletes. But he's looking broaden the playing field across his 200 acres by building a state-of-the-art mixed-use sports complex called The Refuge at Cool Springs.

"The mayor is here today talking about for the potential to create a first of its kind of a performance center for youth football," said Jeff Fisher, head coach of the St. Louis Rams and a friend of Mitchell's.

The project would be a dream development, potentially bringing American Youth Football to the area. "They're the nation's largest youth football organization, out of Orlando," Fisher said. "To think that they would want to come here, locate here and start up something like a performance center is pretty impressive."

In addition to athletic development on the field, they envision a place that would help develop life skills off the field.

"We would be all-inclusive," Fisher said, "all different types of things from dormitories to classrooms, to fields to counseling, to life skills."

A luxury hotel, upscale shopping, dining and residential retreats are all part of the plans for the multi-use development. "There's a new vision associated with it right now," Fisher said.

The entertainment amenities would draw more than just sports fans to the building stakeholders hope will be the nation's premiere youth sports exhibition and training facility.
