The Alabama Department of Public Safety reports that 42 people died on Alabama highways in the first month of 2014.

There were 41 deaths in the month of December 2013 and 40 during the same time period a year earlier.

Preliminary traffic crash data shows from January's fatality total indicates that of the 42 deaths, seatbelts were available in 38 cases. Of those deaths, 23 were not wearing a seatbelt.

"We must be more proactive in ensuring everyone buckles up every time they travel on the roadways," said Transportation Director John Cooper. "Our goal for this year is to decrease the number of crashes and fatalities, continue to promote more seat belt use and work toward zero deaths on Alabama's highways."

A DPS investigation shows that of traffic crashes in both 2012 and 2013, more than 59 percent of victims who were killed did not use a seatbelt.
