Families react after Alabama Power evicts dozens from their homes

DADEVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

Sue and Tommy Duck never thought it would come down to this. The Ducks are forced to give up their home of 27 years.

"I'm angry, hurt and frustrated," said Mrs. Duck.

Alabama Power owns the land Pleasure Point Park sits, 37 acres that border a part of Lake Martin in Dadeville. The power company says there are major issues with the underground septic system.

It's become a 'safety concern' and Alabama Power says it had no choice but to tell dozens of mobile homeowners to be gone by late June.

"Unfortunately, we've got to address this septic problem quickly," said Alabama Power spokesman Brandon Glover.

One of the issues, according to Glover, is the discharge of grey water into the lake. The Tallapoosa County Health Department cited the property for 19 violations and reportedly gave Alabama Power 30 days to come up with a plan of action last summer and this is the company's solution.

Many residents have a real problem with the way Alabama Power is handling this. They feel there is a better way of addressing the issue.

In fact, homeowners like the Ducks offered to spend their own money to repair the septic violations. As a group the neighborhood was willing to spend $500,000. Alabama Power declined.

"Residents did meet with us last November, but unfortunately our concern is to get this problem repaired and do what we can to help them move," Glover explained.

"They told us we couldn't afford it," Duck said of Alabama Power.

Glover says Alabama Power won't know the true cost of repairs until the homes are removed and engineers get in and see what's going on. Alabama Power says it has no long range plans for the property.

Some homeowners, there are around 70 to 80, have already moved away leaving their homes up for sale, no pleasure in leaving Pleasure Point Park.
