Muscogee County School Board discusses impact of Governor's proposed budget increase

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

At a work session held by the Muscogee County School Board (MCSB) yesterday, Feb. 10, questions rose about the type of impact Governor Nathan Deal's proposed increase in state education funding will have in Muscogee County.

Deal is proposing a budget increase of about four percent. MCSB member John Wells says teacher retirement funding, and other obligations, will immediately absorb that increase, leaving Muscogee schools under funded.

"When we get through with the Governor's budget down here, we will have about the same budget we had in the year 2002. So we're still about 12 years behind on funding from the state," says Wells.

Wells says board members are confident that Superintendent David Lewis will be working diligently to bring back a responsible budget sometime in the next few months.
