Second suspect arrested in Dadeville pharmacy armed robbery case

DADEVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

One week after authorities took a suspect into custody and charged him with armed robbery of the Lake Martin Pharmacy in Dadeville, investigators are making another arrest. This time, it's the suspect's wife in handcuffs.

Investigators say they developed information that 41-year-old suspect Robert Shannon Carswell, who stormed into the store armed with a black, semi-automatic pistol, was not alone.

Carswell's wife, 27-year-old Notasulga resident April Carswell, also known as April Schieferstien and April Harris, was in the get-away vehicle and aided commission of the robbery.

Mrs. Carswell is now charged with Pharmacy Robbery and, stemming from a search warrant, charges of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Authorities say the woman also has pending charges in Macon County for Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and is facing a warrant from the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Department for Promoting Prison Contraband.

Other possible charges are pending.

The armed robbery happened on just before 9:45 a.m. on February 11 when Mr. Carswell entered the pharmacy on Mariaden Drive and demanded various narcotics from the employees. The robbery was captured on store security video. Only the male suspect was seen entering and leaving the store.

Within a short time of airing a television report that evening Dadeville Police Chief David Barbour contacted WSFA 12 News to say the suspect was in custody.

Carswell was charged with five counts of Pharmacy Robbery, a Class A felony which carries a sentence of 10-99 years in prison per count. Other charges are also pending.

The sunglasses and shirt pulled over Carswell's face were no match for attentive viewers who lit up the chief's tip line. Chief Barbour says the suspect was caught during a traffic stop in Macon County near Tallassee.

Carswell is being held at the Tallapoosa County Jail pending bond.

"Your video worked," Barbour said, also crediting viewers of the Alexander City Outlook. "Thanks again."

Investigators from The Tallapoosa County Drug Taskforce, U.S. Marshall's Service, Auburn Police Dept., Opelika Police Dept. District Attorney's Office and The Tallassee Police Dept. assisted in the investigation on this case.
