The Elmore County Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to fire Stanhope Elmore High School teacher and coach Jeffrey Stanton.

Stanton is facing a rape charged for allegedly raping a 17-year-old student.

Stanton, 32, appeared in court Feb. 11 for a preliminary hearing on a rape charge. Judge Patrick Pinkston bound the case over to a grand jury.

During the hearing, a Millbrook Police Department detective said the student was raped on Stanton's desk. The student reportedly mentioned the incident to a counselor who then contacted the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

The defense alleges the student waited about nine months to confide in someone about the alleged rape. The defense also said Stanton was in a relationship with the victim's mother for nine months.

Elmore County District Attorney Randall  Houston says juveniles are typically "late reporters" and the statute of limitations never expires for sexual assault charges.

Prosecutors say they are still waiting for evidence in this case to be processed.
