GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division is urging people to stay off the roads on Wednesday after Gov. Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency for most of the state.

With more than 6 inches of snow expected in much of the Upstate, the SCEMD issued a severe winter weather alert, where power outages and dangerous road conditions are likely.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is also urging people to stay off the roadways, saying the traffic conditions could change by the hour.

During Tuesday's snowfall, SCDOT said people traveling too fast for the conditions, skidding off roadways, tailgating and stopping abruptly were the main causes of problems reported.

Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the South Carolina Highway Patrol was also urging people to stay off the roads Wednesday. He said although people may wake up to dry roads and think they've missed the storm, that's not the case. Because the storm is moving in throughout the morning and forecast to last into Thursday, people should stay home and enjoy the time with their families, he said.

He also said troopers often investigating crashes because of the weather encounter drivers who were out simply exploring.

"They're out riding around. You know, it's not worth you getting injured seriously or possibly losing your life in these conditions because things are going to be bad, and you need to think about your family and just stay home," Rhyne said. "Unless you have a medical emergency, there's really no excuse to be out on the road today."

In Mauldin, police even shut down Ashmore Bridge Road from Sonoma Drive to Fowler because of the conditions.

In the event of an emergency, SCEMD said to call *hp or 911.
