ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) -

Alexander City police are still searching for answers in the murder of an elderly man Tuesday. Police say this is the first homicide of the year.

The victim and the man accused of the crime were reportedly friends and neighbors.

Authorities say they were called to a residence on Circle Drive around 7:50 p.m. on reports of a possible suicide. When investigators arrived, they found 75-year-old Donald Jenkins, deceased. He'd been shot multiple times.

The investigation showed Jenkins' death was not self-inflicted and arrested the homeowner, 60-year-old James Benjamin Ewing.

"When they arrived on the scene they noticed very quickly that this was not a suicide and then they started investigating a little further," said Alex City Cpl. Michael Howell. "It was called in to the police department by the offender's wife. She came home and found this individual."

Police say this is a very delicate situation. You have neighbors living right next to each other, who were good friends and one of them was charge with his friend's murder.

WSFA 12 News Reporter Tametria Conner did attempt to reach out to the families and was unsuccessful. Police are still trying to figure out a motive.

Ewing is being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail on $200,000 bond while the victim's family is grieving.

Police say this is still an active investigation. If you have any information about this case, please call the Alex City police department at 256-234-3421.
