Sylvania man turns backyard into skating rink

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Who hasn't complained about our snowy, cold winter?  John Chiantis in Sylvania hasn't.

He's turned his backyard into a skating rink and much more. All John his rink lacks is a Zamboni to smooth out the ice.

Chiantis built it in January, first shoveling snow into place then flooding it with water from a garden hose.

"Well, I used to build rinks every year when the kids were younger," he said. "And I heard we'd have this big storm and it was a perfect time to do it."

He added some nice touches to his rink: There's a snow sofa, fire pit, grill and a sculpted lion's head.

"You build this any way you want," he said. "I don't use plastic. It's just water and snow. Have fire and music, get tired of skating, go in and warm up. It's always here."

Speaking of a warm up, temperatures are expected to reach 50 degrees next week. That means the rink won't always be there, but Chiantis says he'll be ready to re-build, weather permitting.

"Long live the cold weather."
