MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

There were two deadly accidents this week involving pedestrians and broken down cars. In Autauga County Monday and Chilton County Thursday.

State troopers say pedestrian traffic is prohibited on the interstate. But sometimes things happen and cars break down. So what are you supposed to do?

Troopers have tips for motorists who experience mechanical problems with their vehicle on the interstate:

  • Make every attempt to exit the interstate at the next exit. If this is not possible, ALWAYS pull the vehicle out of the travel lanes. Preferably into the emergency lane and as far away from the travel lanes as possible.
  • Stay clear of the travel lanes. Be very careful if you must exit your vehicle.
  • Call 911 or *HP (*47) for assistance.
Troopers also have general tips for motorists traveling on highways:

  • Ensure your vehicle is in good working order to prevent breakdowns prior to traveling on interstate highways. Inspect tires!!
  • Only enter and exit at the entrance/exit ramps.
  • NEVER attempt to cross the median.
  • Stay in the right lane except to pass.
  • Be mindful of vehicles on the shoulder, especially emergency/first responder vehicles, and SLOW DOWN! Obey the state's MOVE OVER law. You never know what the situation is!
  • Never stop on the interstate unless it is an emergency.
  • Never back up on the interstate or shoulder.
  • Expect the unexpected.
