Update: Police searching for missing plane

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a statement concerning a missing plane believed to be in the Trussville area.

They say the aircraft is a Cessna 210 that lost contact with the control tower at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport at about 10:20 Friday night as it was approaching the airport.  The flight originated from Jackson-Evers Intl. Airport in Jackson, MS.

There is no confirmation of the number of passengers on the flight. The FAA plans to release the aircraft registration information after the plane is located and authorities can assess the condition of the passengers.

Officials say a small aircraft from Mississippi tried to land at the airport, but the tower asked them to circle due to inclement weather. The tower then lost contact with the aircraft in the Goodner Mountain road area.

FOX6 has crews on the scene and will bring you the latest as it becomes available.
