(WTVM) - Within the last decade, spoken word poetry has spread across the nation.
Award-winning poets Richard "Shake the Poet" White and Poet Pariah join the newsroom.
According to White, spoken word poetry allows one to share one's experiences, lessons, and stories to an audience. An amount of acting can also be involved that brings one's words to life.
Slam poetry is a competitive form of spoken work poetry. Pariah Poet says that the rules of slam poetry are more precise than spoken word. A poet's performance, called a "slam", is 3 minutes and 10 seconds long. There are five judges in the audience that score the competitors. The winner is determined after the highest and the lowest scores are eliminated.
Some of the best poets in the country reside in Columbus. Both White and Pariah Poet represent the group Venom Mob Inc. They will have a performance Friday, Feb. 21 at 9 p.m. at The Gallery at Fountain Park on Macon Rd.
