AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Last week, the Auburn City School Board of Education approved an amendment to the 2014 budget to save $1.2 million.

Making budget cuts are typical every year for the school board, but this amount is considerably larger than cuts in years past due to the need for more space.

"As we went through the tax referendum and that was not a successful effort, we heard from people and they wanted us to live within our means and so I took that seriously and we started looking at the budget," explain Auburn City School Superintendent Dr. Karen DeLano.

The budget cuts include reducing extracurricular transportation, cutting professional development funding for teachers, reducing summer school costs and cutting the textbook budget by $400,000.

Every six years new textbooks are bought for a particular subject.

This year, new social studies books will not be purchased.

"As we're growing, you know we had 456 more students than we did last year, when we have new students we need to buy textbook in all the subject areas for the new students," says DeLano.

Numbers show that in the next ten years, Auburn High School will have 3,200 students enrolled in grades 10-12, making it the largest high school in the state of Alabama.

DeLano says residents will probably start to see portable classrooms on campuses to make room for this growth.

Next week, the public is invited to two town meetings to hear more the budget cuts and weigh in on newly developed plans for facility needs.

"I hope that people who came out to the vote will also come to hear the options and let us know how they feel about those options to help give me direction," explains DeLano.

The first town meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m.

The second will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
