Heartburn, or acid reflux, is a common condition we all experience from time to time.

Heartburn occurs when there is some relaxation in the lower esophageal sphincter, which connects the esophagus to the stomach. This allows some acid in the stomach to go back into the esophagus and causes the burning sensation.

Some symptoms of heartburn include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a sore or hoarse throat.

Occasional heartburn shouldn't cause worry, but people who experience heartburn more than twice a week may have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which usually requires some type of treatment. Treatment for GERDs includes avoiding smoking, eating small, frequent meals, avoiding lying down after a meal, and elevating your head with pillows when you sleep.
