Retired Columbus man wins Georgia Lottery jackpot

(WTVM) -

One Columbus man's retirement just got $150,000 sweeter with a big win from the Georgia Lottery.

Eddie Willis, 70, matched all five numbers from the Feb. 12 Fantasy 5 drawing, winning the jackpot prize. He claimed his prize Feb. 14 at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Columbus.

"My daughter gave me the first clue when she let me know that somebody in Columbus won," Willis said. "I checked my numbers, and I was excited."

Willis served 30 years working for the fire department, and 10 years working for the sheriff's office. He has two adult children with his wife, Asierlean.

"I want to trade in my daughter's car for a new car," Willis said. "My wife and I will enjoy the rest."

Circle K Stores #6709, located at 6101 Bradley Park Dr. in Columbus, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket. The winning numbers were: 1-3-6-11-39.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
