Kress Building getting new life as music venue

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

In the heart of Biloxi's Vieux Marche area sits the historic Kress Building. A look at the eclectic art plastered all over the building gives you the idea that something different is happening here.

Inside, an ambitious renovation of the 20,000 square foot building is underway. The structure is being turned into Kress Live.

"We're going to turn it into a live music venue," said developer Chase Taylor.

"It'll be something incredible for the area. We'll bring 150 shows in next year. We'll have bands from every genre of music and every walk of life. It's going to be a spectacular place."

The building reflects early 20th century architecture. Taylor plans to use that to his advantage by showcasing and preserving that history

"We wanted to open it up and make it available to the public and show the character of the local culture and architecture. By creating this venue, it will be exposed to everyone. You'll see that local feel."

A section of the building will be set aside for what Taylor will call the American Heritage Museum for Music, featuring memorabilia with an emphasis and Mississippi's rich history.

The demolition of the interior began this week.

"We've created balcony systems. It's a four floor building with roughly 2,000 occupancy. We'll be able to record music live on stage. The stage will be on the south side of the building."

The project is expected to be completed by the summer of this year.
