Groundbreaking held for new Ft. Benning elementary school


A groundbreaking ceremonywas held on Fort Benning on Friday at the site of what will be the new McBride ElementarySchool.

Students were seated forthe ceremony while their classmates led the Pledge of Allegiance and sangsongs.

The new school is expectedto take two years to complete and will feature retractable walls, classroomneighborhoods, studios, and state-of-the-art technology.

Superintendent Dr. ChristyCabezas says it's truly a gift to the community.

"This school is not justto educate the children, it's also a place for the community to come here andhave events, dance recitals, adult education," said Dr. Cabezas. "So it'sreally a hub for the community at Fort Benning."

Cabezas says it's a Twenty-first Century school and will use renewable energy sources like solarpanels and maybe even wind turbines.

The school willaccommodate 650 students. The last school built on Fort Benning was back in1993.
