FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Fort Benning on Friday at the site of what will be the new McBride Elementary School.

Students were seated for the ceremony while their classmates led the Pledge of Allegiance and sang songs.

The new school is expected to take two years to complete and will feature retractable walls, classroom neighborhoods, studios, and state-of-the-art technology.

Superintendent Dr. Christy Cabezas says it's truly a gift to the community.

"This school is not just to educate the children, it's also a place for the community to come here and have events, dance recitals, adult education," said Dr. Cabezas. "So it's really a hub for the community at Fort Benning."

Cabezas says it's a Twenty-first Century school and will use renewable energy sources like solar panels and maybe even wind turbines.

The school will accommodate 650 students. The last school built on Fort Benning was back in 1993.
