Soup fans break bread and raise money for Youth Villages

(WMC-TV) - Some of the finest restaurants in the Mid-South teamed up Sunday to help area youngsters by raising money for Youth Villages. The event was the 25th annual Soup Sunday fundraiser.

Seconds after a dinner bell kicked off the start of Soup Sunday, Thousands of people rushed into the FedEx Forum for an afternoon of good food and good music.

The 25 annual Soup Sunday fundraiser hit a high note with mid-southerners.  John Thatcher says he's been getting ready all weekend.

"Ah I've actually fasted all weekend and I plan to go into the gym in the morning to kind of work off a little bit of all of this," said Soup Sunday fan John Thatcher.

The list of nearly 800 gallons of soups available reads like a who's who of fine eating; from The Half Shell to Celtic Crossing Irish Pub and Restaurant.

In addition to eating, participants also vote on their favorite dishes. The Frost Bake Shop's Bill Kloos won last year with strawberry cake. Now he's hoping for a repeat win.

"All made from scratch, no shorting very moist," said Kloos.

Over the years proceeds from Soup Sunday have raised more than a million dollars for Youth Villages.  Funding programs that helps foster kids live on their own when they reach age 18.

"We provide residential programs, we have foster care programs, we have intense in home services," said Youth Villages CEO Patrick Lawler.

The good eating may be over, but Soup Sunday fans are already looking forward to next year.
