MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

High school girls were invited to Middle Tennessee State University to check out the school's Department of Engineering Technology, and it's all for a very important reason.

Even Thomas Edison didn't get the light bulb to illuminate on the first try, but on what they called "girls day" at MTSU, all they wanted was a spark to get high school girls interested in science.

"If you've grown up being told that science and engineering are not for you, then you don't develop that confidence," said MTSU professor Cliff Welborn.

Libby Wheeler was among the 60 teenagers brought to campus, where she created her own cell phone charger.

"It's not hard, but it's not easy. Then again, I've never done it before, so I don't really know what I'm doing," Wheeler said.

By the end of the day, the hope is to change that.

"We're gonna turn our knowledge of science into something useful, which is going to be our cell phone charger," Welborn said.

Oakland High School junior Samantha Seibert learned how to produce energy by connecting electrical wires.

"We're just basically transferring the energy from the wires to the battery to make the fan rotate," she said, demonstrating the project.

The engineering technology department at MTSU is always up to something fun. The award-winning students have created moon buggies that get NASA's approval, they've made a Formula One race car and they have a bus that runs not on gasoline but on french fry grease.
