New McDonnell case subpoena requests server with thousands of emails

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The McDonnell defense team scored a legal win Monday, after a federal judge ordered a server with thousands of emails must be sent to Maureen McDonnell's lawyers.

The server belongs to a defunct political fundraising and event planning firm, known as Benedetti & Farris. The thousands of emails contain personal details belonging to influential political clients –information the defense says will be relevant in its fight against corruption charges.

According to a motion requesting the subpoena, the search of the server concerns the former First Lady's Chief of Staff, Mary Shea Sutherland. The defense is requesting all emails and documents from the server referencing Ms. Sutherland's relations with the McDonnells, Jonnie Williams and Star Scientific.

The defense also wants to examine all documents on the server related to a luncheon event held at the Governor's Mansion on August 30, 2011 - the product launch for a Star Scientific dietary supplement.

The subpoena orders that the server must be turned over within five days of Feb. 24, 2014.
