Still too early to tell how military cuts will affect Ft. Benning

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

A new budget proposal calls for the smallest army the United States has seen in over 70 years.

The new plan outlined on Monday by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel would help save money over the next few years, but would cut thousands of troops.

News Leader 9 reached out to officials at Fort Benning to find out how the proposed cuts could affect those on post.

In a statement we were told "Fort Benning is primarily a training post. If there are fewer active duty soldiers, then there will be fewer soldiers to train."

We also spoke to Columbus residents about how they feel about the potential change.

Officials with Fort Benning say it's still too early to determine exactly how the post would be affected. Defense Secretary Hagel is proposing cutting the Army to about 450,000 troops
