Dog involved in mauling death of Tallassee 4-year-old put down

TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) -

Tallassee police say a dog involved in the mauling death of a 4-year-old girl this week has been put down.

Authorities say the owner surrendered his pet, and the dog's remains will be sent to Auburn for an autopsy.

Police Chief Jimmy Rodgers told WSFA 12 News Friday that his department and the District Attorney's office haven't come to a conclusion on whether charges will be filed in the case.

The 4-year-old girl was killed after being attacked by dogs Wednesday. When authorities arrived to a house on Lower Tuskegee Road, just south of Tallassee, they found the victim in the living room of the home. The little girl suffered numerous injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He got the dog off and brought her inside the home. By the time the ambulance got there she had already died," said Rodgers.

According to police, the child's grandfather said that after 30 or 45 minutes of not hearing from the girl, he went to check on her in the yard. That's when he says he saw a white dog standing over the child, and it appeared to be dragging her.

Chief Rodgers says the little girl was simply playing in her own front yard alone when the dogs attacked her. The family doesn't want the child's identity to be released.

Tallassee has a leash law but it doesn't apply in what's known as the police jurisdiction. The police jurisdiction is typically the area within three miles before you get to the city limits.

The two dogs, A German Shepherd and a Lab mix were taken into custody Wednesday.

"For some reason the dogs attacked her and we're not sure why. These dogs apparently frequent the area," Rodgers said.

Chief Rodgers tells WSFA he is not aware of any reports of vicious dogs in the area.

However, Mable Cullars says if these are the same dogs she's thinking about they are mean and have a history.

"I know one of them killed another dog and injured a friend's pet and just clawed his neck," Cullars said.
