COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Events took an unexpected turn when Columbus police responded to a call about a Burglary in Progress at 1026 Enoch Dr. around 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

As police were responding to the initial call, resident Erwin Jenkins reportedly called Columbus E911, and said he had located a vehicle with the burglary suspects in the area of Preakness Dr. He warned that the suspects were armed with guns.

Officers arrived in the area, and approached the car that Jenkins pointed out, located on Stratford Dr. According to police, as they approached, the vehicle drove quickly toward one of the officers. A passenger allegedly raised a handgun, and pointed it at the officer.

The officer fired his weapon in defense, and the suspected vehicle sped away.

Police attempted to pursue the vehicle, but soon lost sight of it. They say no officers or witnesses appeared to be injured at this time, but investigation later revealed that one of the suspects had been shot, and was transported to the Columbus Regional Hospital by a friend in a private vehicle.

This wounded suspect was identified as Demitrius Javan Perry, 19, of Columbus. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, released from the hospital, and arrested.

The other two suspects have also been arrested and identified as 21-year-old Davonte Jhaki Murphy, and a 16-year-old female juvenile.

Jenkins, the resident who called authorities in the first place, was incidentally arrested on charges concerning drugs and a weapon violation.

George Franklin Warnick III, the friend who drove the suspect to the hospital, was also arrested on drug violation charges.

The Columbus Police Department's Investigative Bureau, Office of Professional Standards and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are conducting a coordinated investigation into the incident.

One officer was placed on Administrative Leave with pay while the investigation is conducted.

All five suspects will appear in Recorder's Court at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
