NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Floyd County may lose money after hiring an attorney to dispute claims from David Camm's defense team. A judge ordered Floyd County Auditor Scott Clark to pay the majority of $140,000 for expenses submitted by the defense counsel.

The Floyd County Council retained attorney Gregory Reger to represent the county, as well as Clark, to justify the auditor's concerns. The council approved up to $5,000 to pay Reger for his representation.

However, Judge Jon Dartt ordered Clark to pay the majority of the $140,000 within three days, which includes money owed to additional paralegals and attorneys; air fare and mileage for witnesses and fees for defense experts who testified.

"Just putting it simple - we lost money on it, but I think we had to do it," said Jim Wathen, a member of the Floyd County Council.

Despite retaining an attorney to represent the auditor, Wathen stands behind the legal and financial hurdles Floyd County incurred.

"Our auditor did not have anything to gain by scrutinizing these bills. He was only doing his job," Wathen said.

Wathen didn't have a definitive amount on how much the county will be required to pay in additional attorney fees and related costs.
