ASU moving Turkey Day Classic off of Thanksgiving Day

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

New Alabama State University President Gwendolyn Boyd announced Tuesday that the 91st annual Turkey Day Classic Homecoming football game will not be played on Thanksgiving Day, as has been done in the past.

This year, President Boyd says the game will be played on Saturday, November 22, 2014, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

The game will take place against the Tigers of Stillman College.

Boyd said the change was being made for several reasons:

"First, and most importantly, the move allows our students to be more involved in their Homecoming tradition. The University will no longer have to have two sets of homecoming activities.

Second, this change will allow our football players to compete not only for the SWAC Championship, but also be eligible to compete for the FCS playoffs.

And third, it will provide ample time for those of you who live out of town to travel to Montgomery for Homecoming and still be back home for the holidays."

Boyd promised that all the traditions, including the parade, will continue. The only difference is that it will all occur a week earlier.

ASU's new president also explained that she has been in direct talks with the president of Tuskegee University in an effort to bring back the game's traditional rival, "however, they are unable to play us because of their desire to compete in the NCAA Division II National Playoffs," she wrote.
