LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -

A family staying in a Troup County motel learned they were the subjects of a high tech surveillance operation, but police tell us the men in the room next door were not connected with law enforcement in any way.

Officers arrived at the Town and Country Motel on New Franklin Road to investigate the family's claim that a camera was being inserted through the wall of an adjacent room. She says her two small children were the first to notice it.  When she grabbed the camera, she could feel someone trying to pull it back. She got into a "pulling match" with the unknown person on the other side of the wall until that person gave up and fled the premises. Police recovered the camera, which was hooked up to a video monitor with RCA cables.

"It's basically like a small rod, a flexible rod, that has a lens in the very end of it, that you can feed up and actually wiggle around corners and stuff like that. It's commonly used by agencies that may do surveillance, but as you may know, many of these products are available to every day citizens," said Sgt. Marshall McCoy of the LaGrange Police Department.

The woman said she saw two men leave the room next door and drive away before police arrived.  Investigators don't know if the family was the intended target or why the men were spying on them, but they say unlawful surveillance is a felony offense. The suspects could face several years behind bars.  The victim said she believes the men have been spying on her family for at least the past three weeks.

The victim and her fiance who reported the incident to police declined to speak on camera.

If anyone has any additional information about this incident, you are asked to contact the LaGrange Police Department at 706-883-2603.
