AUM Baseball scores early in 5-3 win over Point

The Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored five times in the bottom of the first inning and held on for a 5-3 victory over Point University Tuesday at the AUM Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Warhawks evened their season record at 11-11, while the Skyhawks fell to .500 on the year at 9-9.

AUM collected eight hits in the contest, including two each by Lance Wilson and Trevor Sprowl. Hayden Hillyer and Blake Bearden both drove in a pair of runs, while Michael Radoslovich also added a RBI.

Jacob Gibson (1-2) earned the victory, tossing six innings and allowing just two earned runs. Gibson struck out one and scattered just four hits. Britt Wilson tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings, allowing two hits in the process, while Richard Nason threw a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season.

The Warhawks took the lead for good in the first inning, with four of their runs coming with two outs. Wilson led off the bottom of the frame with a single and later stole second, before moving around to third on a single by Brandon Pooler. Radoslovich followed by reaching on a dropped fly ball by Johnnie Eaton, plating Wilson with the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, Hillyer connected on a two-run triple, while Bearden capped the scoring with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot.

The Skyhawks cut the margin to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning, using and RBI single from Chad Helms and a sacrifice fly by Trevor Maxey to get on the board. Point added its final run when Maxey stole home in the sixth inning.

After allowing the five runs in the first, Skyhawk starter Ryan Mossman settled down and allowed just four hits over the next six innings. Mossman allowed just one earned run and struck out two in seven innings, but fell to 1-1 on the season. Helms led Point with two hits and a RBI.

AUM will return to action Wendesday, when it hosts Judson University at 3 p.m.
