PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

The 55-year-old woman who died March 5 in a house fire in Phenix City has been identified as Carrie Rhodes, according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.

Smiths Station Fire Chief Bob Johnson says there was heavy fire and smoke conditions when they arrived to the house located on the 100 block of Lee Road 220.

"It was zero visibility when we entered the structure," says Johnson.

Johnson says it appears that the fire started in the kitchen area; the victim was found in the bathroom. The precise cause is not known at this time.

"It's sad," says Johnson. "This is the 45th fatality statewide, and it's never a good thing. My people hate it, I hate it. Unfortunately, that's what we do our job for. We try to win every battle, but sometimes we can't."

Johnson stresses that residents need to practice fire prevention, as well as having an exit plan in case of fire. "Make sure your family is safe. Check your smoke detectors, and make sure they're operational. Get out. Call 911, and let the professionals handle it," he says.

Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department, and Phenix City Fire Department also sent units to help put the fire out. No firefighters were injured in the incident.
