AUM Women's Basketball season comes to an End against MMC

The Auburn Montgomery women's basketball saw its season come to an end Wednesday, when it was defeated by Martin Methodist 68-56 in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Warhawks finished the season with a 14-15 record. The RedHawks (23-8) will advance to take on the East Division's top seed Southern Poly Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

Tina Odume led the Warhawks with 19 points and nine rebounds. Katie Williams and Gabby Brown added eight points each, while Kaylan Withrow and Shanice Burnette chipped in six points.

Martin Methodist took control of the game during the final five minutes, as they scored the final 13 points of the contest.

Trailing by as many as 14 points, 41-27, in the second half, Katie Williams capped a 29-14 AUM run during an 11-minute span, when she hit her 85th 3-pointer of the season and gave the Warhawks a 56-55 lead with 5:06 left to play. The point proved to be the final of the game for AUM, as it missed its final five shots and committed four turnovers down the stretch.

The Warhawks opened the game by scoring the first nine points, with Odume scoring six points during the spurt.

AUM maintained the lead until Rachel Brown connected on a deep trey and gave the RedHawks a 23-22 advantage with 4:43 left in the first half. The triple was early in a 13-0 run to help MMC erase a five-point deficit and take a 30-22 lead. The RedHawks led 31-24 at the half.

Martin Methodist opened the second period with a 10-3 run to reach the game-high lead of 14 points following a basket by Kelsey Nowlin, before the Warhawks final run.

For the game, AUM shot 42 percent from the floor, well above the RedHawks' nation-leading average of 33.3 percent. MMC held a commanding advantage on the glass, as it outrebounded the Warhawks 46-27, including 21-6 on the offensive boards.

Tyffani Fenwick finished with a career-best 27 points for Martin Methodist, while Brown added 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Playing her final collegiate game, Williams concluded her two-year career at AUM with 705 points and 148 3-pointers, a mark which ranked seventh in school history.
