ASU Baseball's winning streak ends against UAB

The Alabama State baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped as the Hornets lost to UAB 13-1 Wednesday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Trailing 2-0, Alabama State (12-4) scored its only run in the second inning. Emmanuel Marrero led off with an infield single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Branden Castro singled to left field on a 1-0 pitch to score Marrero.

However, UAB (11-2) would break the game open with three runs in the third and two in the fifth, and completed the scoring with five in the eighth, and one in the ninth.

"We didn't have a lot of fight tonight," head coach Mervyl Melendez said. "When a team jumps out to an early lead, what you have to do is minimize the damage, fight back, and get back in the ball game. We didn't do that. We didn't fight through adversity tonight, and because of it, they had more than two good innings. That's the case in sports; if you don't fight through adversity, often times the outcome is going to be against you."

The Hornets return to action this weekend when it hosts a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series against Alcorn State.

Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., and Sunday's single game begins at 1 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
