OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

Charges are not pending at this time against the man who was injured last week in an officer-involved shooting in Opelika.

Bright orange markings by investigators, a pool of blood and vomit remained on the side of I-85 hours after an officer-involved shooting sent one man to the hospital late Thursday March 6.

Opelika police Chief John McEachern has identified Officer Phillip Hancock as the officer involved in the Thursday night shooting. Hancock is a seven year veteran with Opelika police and was not injured.

We are told Officer Hancock was called to the interstate to pull over an erratic driver around 7 p.m. near Exit 62.

At some point during this stop, 20-year-old Michael Davidson of Texas was shot by Officer Hancock and transported to the hospital. Davidson is an airman and was on his way to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina when the incident occurred.

The ABI has been called in to investigate; they will not comment, and neither will the District Attorney.

The Opelika Police Department says Hancock has been placed on administrative leave with pay as a standard operating procedure, pending the outcome of the ABI investigation.

A lot of questions still remain. We do not know if the injured man fired upon or threatened Officer Hancock or others who may have been on the scene.

We do know however that police are keeping specific details to themselves, as the investigation moves forward.

The ABI will only say the Chief of Police called them in to investigate and they will present their findings to the District Attorney.

The D.A. says he has no comment on what he suspects may have happened last night along that interstate.
