TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

The man shot dead by Arizona Department of Public Safety officers early Monday morning was "probably" the same man who shot and killed two people, one in Buckeye and another in Glendale, police officials from Tempe and Glendale said.

The suspect, identified as Andrew Rael, was shot after a chase by Buckeye police and DPS officers, and after the tires on a gray Jaguar sedan he was driving were punctured about 3:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 60 near Priest Drive in Tempe.

Rael was recently released from a Colorado prison.

Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Doug Nick on Tuesday said the conditions of Rael's parole were to report monthly, stay out of trouble, not take any drugs and continue his landscaping job.

Nick said there was no indication he had been doing anything wrong, and that he appeared to be in compliance with conditions of parole until last weekend.

Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley said the suspect was driving "the same car" that was on the back of a white tow truck the suspect drove away from the Buckeye shooting.

"I cannot confirm 100 percent, but that is most likely how this will wind up," Pooley said.

DPS officers were trying to apprehend Rael when he got out of his car and fired at officers about 3:30 a.m., said Bart Graves, of DPS.

The incident began with Buckeye police following Rael near Interstate 10 and 35th Avenue. DPS monitored the pursuit and got involved just after the Interstate 10-U.S. 60 transition, Graves said.

DPS officers placed stop sticks on the freeway and were successful in disabling the vehicle near Priest Avenue, Graves said.

Rael got out of his car and began shooting at the officers, who returned fire. The suspect got back into his car, but after several minutes, no movement was seen in the car, Graves said.

A Phoenix Police Department K-9 was called in and the man was found dead.

One DPS officer suffered cuts from flying glass, but no other officers were injured.

The freeway, a major artery in the East Valley, was closed from Interstate 10 to Mill Avenue through evening rush hour, an Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman said.

This is the 13th shooting of 2014 involving an officer in the Valley.

The suspect was reportedly from Buckeye.

Glendale and Tempe police said the suspect also matched the description of the gunman who shot and killed a convenience store employee at the AMPM store at 99th and Glendale avenues about 1:45 a.m. Monday.

The victim was identified as Daniel Scott White, 26, of Glendale.

Officers said no firm confirmation of a connection to this case can be made until all the evidence and forensics have been analyzed.
