BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The only suspect in the disappearance of Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway will eventually be facing charges in Alabama.

It may take 20 plus years, but Peru's government says once Joran van der Sloot completes his murder conviction he's serving there he will be extradited to the United States. That means van der Sloot will face trial in Alabama in 2038 on charges he extorted and defrauded Holloway's mother.

Van der Sloot is currently serving 28 years in prison for killing 21-year-old Peruvian student Stephany Flores after meeting her in a casino. The slaying occurred five years to the day after Natalee Holloway disappeared during trip to Aruba.

Holloway was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot. Her body was never found and no charges were filed against van der Sloot in the case.

U.S. prosecutors allege van der Sloot accepted $25,000 in cash from Holloway's family in exchange for a promise to lead a lawyer for the family to her body just before he went to Peru.
