TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

The man accused of stealing a bus that services Tempe residents and driving into a block wall Tuesday morning gave Tempe police a false name when he was arrested.

James Robert Martin, 26, was originally identified as 21-year-old Patric Moonie by police.

But a family member called police after seeing the suspect's photo on local media to tell them Moonie was really Martin, said Tempe police Sgt. Michael Pooley.

The Orbit bus was left idling in the Tempe Transit Center at 200 E. Fifth St. when it was stolen about 7:30 a.m., Pooley said.

No passengers were aboard, Pooley said.

Police spotted the bus near Mill Avenue and 13th Street and followed the bus into a cul-de-sac in the 100 block of W. Hudson Street, where Martin drove through a backyard, knocking down a fence, then drove onto the railroad tracks.

Martin drove approximately 1/4 mile on the tracks to the area of 15th Street and College Avenue where he jumped out of the moving vehicle, which crashed into the back wall of a house.

Police said Martin tried to flee and jumped into a backyard where the resident was outside with his large dogs.

Police sad the dogs began barking at Martin and he stayed put until he was arrested on multiple charges, including theft and criminal trespassing.

Martin was arrested in 2013 and had given the name Patric Moonie and was in the criminal system under that name, Pooley said. Investigators later confirmed the false identity and said he would face an additional charge for providing the false name.

Orbit is a free service that takes residents to local destinations, such as shopping areas.
