PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police returned Tuesday to the scene of Friday's teen murder-suicide for a second, closer look.

They were mapping out what happened, collecting more evidence, such as a bullet shell casing, and taking photos of what appeared to be bullet holes in this screen door.

"Ana was running when she was shot," explained Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

It all started last Thursday, when police say Ana Greer told school administrators Matthew Bolton's ex-girlfriend might be in danger.

"She said she thought that Matthew would try to beat her up," Thompson explained.

In fact, investigators learned after interviewing that girl, Bolton had gotten physical with her.

"He had grabbed her arm when she tried to walk away in the past and hit her on her legs to cause bruising."

By last Friday, rumors of a gun on campus were rampant on social media, police said. While Matthew Bolton's name came up, investigators said they couldn't confirm he was at school Friday.

But around 10:45 a.m. Friday, "Matthew had called another student and asked for a ride to a friend's house," Thompson explained.

The house Thompson referred to is the on Villa Linda Drive, the scene of Friday's murder-suicide.

"In fact, Ana, Matthew and the friend who lived in that house were in the bedroom at one time," Thompson said. "As they were talking the friend told Matthew and Ana to go outside."

But as to what may have set Bolton off, police said they have no clue.

"Those are the questions that cause everybody to scratch their heads," Thompson said. "What on earth could be bad enough that a 15-year-old would kill another teenager and then himself?"

There have been a lot of questions about where Bolton got the gun. Police said it appears he stole the firearm from his 28-year-old brother's locked bedroom by breaking into a window.

Police said Bolton offered a friend a computer as payment to drop him off at that Villa Linda house. The computer came in a backpack and that friend told investigators he did see some spent shell casings in that backpack.

But investigators don't think he knew Bolton had a gun. They also didn't think he had any idea Bolton might shoot someone.
