Cougar bats boom in blowout win

ALBANY, Ga. – Columbus State hammered out 27 hits en route to a 26-1 victory over Albany State on Wednesday. The game took place at Golden Ram Park in Albany, Ga. 

In a 3-1 game after two, CSU (18-7) broke the game open with seven runs in the third. Mike McClellan had a two-run single while Matt Nettles and Jackson Oliver each drove in a pair. 

McClellan made it a 12-1 game with a two-run blast in the fourth. It was the sophomore's third home run of the season. 

After a pair of solo homers by Oliver and Blake Edwards in the fifth, Columbus State put another seven spot on the board in the seventh. The outburst was highlighted by a grand slam by Brendan Collins. 

Columbus State wrapped up the scoring in the ninth with four more runs. Blaine Miller and Tim Massengale had RBI singles while Edwards had a run scoring double. Caleb Williams also added a sacrifice fly. 

Eleven different Cougars recorded a hit including Blake Edwards who went 5-for-6 with five runs scored and five driven in. The sophomore had two doubles and also went deep during the game. 

Mike McClellan also had an outstanding game going 4-for-5 with six RBIs. 

Brendan Collins was 2-for-6 while Jimmy Obermark (2-for-4) added two more doubles. The senior scored four times as well during the game. 

Jackson Oliver (2-for-7) drove in three with a double and a home run. Tim Massengale (3-for-6) and Carson Bowers (3-for-7) also had good days at the plate. 

Ryan Pistey (2-0) allowed just one run on four hits en route to his second victory of the season. Shawn Thomas pitched one scoreless inning while Jake Ezell picked up a save tossing the final three innings of the game. 

Columbus State will return home on Friday, March 14 hosting Montevallo at 6:00 p.m. ET at Ragsdale Field. The game will begin a three-game Peach Belt Conference series.
