OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Opelika Power Services is warning customers against a bold scam artist who is trying to take away your money.
Tuesday, an Opelika veterinarian's office received a call from a local number, 334-246-8996, telling them they had not made a payment. They never expected what would happen next.
"Someone actually came into their business yesterday as a representative from the power company saying power would be disconnected if they didn't make a payment, and he would be back at 6 p.m. to collect," explains June Owens, OPS Manager of Marketing and Communications.
The man was described as having dark hair and driving a bucket truck without any markings.
He told the business to purchase a "pre-paid" card, usually found at a local convenient store, in the amount they owed, usually totaling hundreds of dollars, or their power would be cut off.
We called this local number and were directed to a machine saying we had reached the credit and collection department.
"Opelika Power would never give you a number to call or ask you to get a pre-paid card to make a payment, and anyone who has been threatened that your power will be turned off needs to call us," says Owens.
If you are approached in person or receive a call, OPS wants you to contact them immediately to verify any payments.
Also, write down any numbers given to you, try to get a name of who has called you and call the Opelika Police Department once the scam has been verified.
"You do get a delinquent notice. We don't typically call people," says Owens. "But we wouldn't call you and ask you to get a prepaid card."
OPS employees wear a khaki shirt with the OPS logo and their name for easy identification.
If you are a victim, call Opelika Power Services' one and only local number, 334-705-5170.
