NYC blast hits close to home for Gilbert neighborhood

"It scares me. It scares a couple of my neighbors. GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

At least three people are dead and at least 60 others are hurt after a natural gas explosion destroyed an East Harlem building Wednesday.

Many in a Gilbert neighborhood say the explosion reminds them of a similar natural gas explosion that occurred in their neighborhood, albeit on a much smaller scale.

On Feb. 9, Jason Nelson lit a cigarette in his garage, which caused the explosion. Friends said he's still in the hospital recovering after 11 surgeries for burns over 80 percent of his body.

"It scares me. It scares a couple of my neighbors. (The NYC explosion) is just a constant reminder that it could have happened to any of us, or all of us," said Vicky Hodge, who lives next door to where the Gilbert explosion happened.

Wednesday, the neighborhood appeared like any other. The only reminder that something had happened a month ago was a boarded-up garage door.

"Look at the garage," said Hodge. "It's (a reminder) every day when we walk."
