COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Lonnie Ragan has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Ragan will serve an additional 50 years consecutively.
On March 7, 2014 Ragan was found guilty of murdering his sister-in-law, Holly Hearn. According to witnesses, in 2011 Ragan shot Hearn in the chest nine times at close range.
Hearn's husband, Ryan Hearn, and children were present during the shooting.
"I loved my wife...I will be haunted by this moment forever," Ryan Hearn said before the sentencing. Ryan went on to say that his children have been diagnosed with PTSD, among other problems, since the shooting.
Hearn's sister, Angela Thoman, says the family now suffers from nightmares, depression, and paranoia.
Ragan's mother also spoke before the sentencing. She says Lonnie was abused by his biological father and it has caused him problems throughout his life. She says he has been getting help for mental disorders since he was 14 years old.
"There are no winners here. Both families lose," his mother said.
Ragan showed no emotion after the sentencing.
