COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

"Youth of the Year" is the highest honor for the Chattahoochee Valley Boys and Girls Club, and last night, March 13, 18-year-old Caleshia Ferguson received the 2014 title.

The program recognizes outstanding contributions these young men and women have made to their family, school, community and, of course, the Boys and Girls Club.

Four teens were nominated to win the title, including Ferguson, Joseph Knight, Austin Leathers, and Jhaqula Tyson. They all went through rigorous training and preparation for this event.     

Ferguson tells News Leader 9 that she wants to be a part of the Boys and Girls

"I was there at 10 years old, and I'm 18, and I'm still here," she said. "Like, I'm gonna be here til I can't come back. Or, you know, try to be a staff member, you know, just to be there for the kids, because I know how it feels to have somebody there when you feel like you ain't got nobody."

Ferguson will now go on to compete with teens from all across Georgia for the state title, and a 1,000 scholarship. The state level winner will go on to compete for the regional title and a $10,000 scholarship, and the national winner will receive and additional scholarship up to $50,000.
