COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The week of March 17- 21, 2014, is School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. It is a weeklong observance that calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education. The Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) sponsors the celebration.

"It's a privilege to serve our students, teachers, parents, administrators, citizens, district and the entire community," said Board Chair Rob Varner. "We are committed advocates for all of our children in our public schools."

School board members are constitutional officers of Georgia who are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds.

The mission of GSBA is to ensure excellence in the governance of local school systems by providing leadership, advocacy and services, and by representing the collective resolve of Georgia's 180 elected boards of education.

"We commend the Board of Education for fulfilling its responsibilities and working together to continually improve our education system," said David Lewis, Superintendent of Education.
