OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

The Opelika Police Department is investigating a car accident that injured a 5-year-old child on Tuesday evening.

According to investigators, the child was struck by a car on Fruitwood Circle in Opelika after walking away from an ice cream truck.

Witnesses say they saw the car swerving on the road at a high speed. After the child was hit, they say the driver got out of the car, then re-entered the car and drove away. The driver, later identified as Chandra Carlisle, 33, turned herself in to police.

Carlisle was arrested and charged with first degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury.

The child suffered a head injury and was flown to Columbus Regional Hospital. The child is currently listed in satisfactory condition.
