COMMUNITY NOTICE: Fort Benning conducting controlled burning March 21

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - The Directorate of Public Works is conducting controlled/prescribed burns in the east central portion of post training areas Friday March 21.

Winds are predicted from the southeast and will keep smoke away from most sensitive areas, community members may however notice some smoke near these areas today.

Prescribed burning helps prevent the occurrence of wildfires that can result from some military training activities. Firebreaks around impact areas are maintained annually to contain any wildfires that may be triggered by munitions.

It's our intent to keep you informed on why and when we conduct controlled burning on post, so you not only have a better understanding of its necessity, but you can plan for it and adjust your activities, as needed. For more information, community members may call 706-545-2237.  For after hours, please leave a message.

You may also visit the Smoke and Sound website for maps and other information on training.  Individuals who want to be notified of firing on ranges and prescribed burning may be added to the notification list by emailing
