(WTVM) -

Students at Blackmon Road Middle School got a lesson in a healthy lifestyle Friday.

Students from sixth to eighth grade took part in a "Be Fit, Be Cool" program.

They learned about the importance of healthy eating and getting exercise. After a presentation, students walked nearly a mile doing laps around the school grounds.

Dr. Piyush Patel says the goal is to teach them healthy habits early.

"What we are trying to gain, the goal out of this to teach the kids why they need to lose weight and try to be slim," said Dr. Patel. "So in the long run they don't get any medical problems."

More than 100 schools around the country were chosen to take part in the program and Blackmon was the only one chosen in our area.
