CHAGRIN FALLS, OH (WOIO) -

Riley, a 10 pound Yorkshire Terrier, suffered deep lacerations to the neck and loss of blood after being attacked by a coyote.

"They took a look at him and said we can't help him. We don't know if he's going to survive," says pet owner Lori O'Neil. "His entire neck all the way around had been completely torn apart. He was bleeding profusely and the front of his face was bleeding as well because his nose had been punctured."

Riley's owners say the 12-year-old dog was attacked when went out for a quick walk by himself last month in his Tanglewood Lake backyard in Chagrin Falls.

Twenty five minutes later he came back hurt.

"He's clearly been attacked by a coyote," says O'Neil.

O'Neil also says vets told her there have been several dogs attacked by coyotes in the area in the past few months, warning spring is the time when the animals become more aggressive and protective.

Riley's owner is just glad he's ok, but now more aware of what's lurking in her backyard.

"There are risks to you and to your pets and you have to be cognizant. We've changed our routine when he goes out now I stand at the door and watch," says O'Neil.

Coyotes usually travel in packs and many times lure animals away from their yard. That's why it's important to keep a close eye on your pet.
