Car stolen during DUI check

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

What started out a routine DUI check in the early morning hours left a woman without transportation when her car was stolen right in front of the police.

News Leader 9's Tesia Reed joins us live with the details

Police tell us they pulled over a blue Dodge Charger on Cusetta Road at about 3 a.m. Tuesday for not turning off their bright lights when others car were coming.

When the officer smelled alcohol inside the car he asked the driver to step out of the car for a field sobriety test.

As he was doing this the passenger in the car known only as "Bernard" got into the driver's seat and sped off in the car.

When the officer asked the driver if she knew the passenger she said she just met him at the Foxy Lady and only knew him by his first name.

After the test police tell us the driver was actually not driving under the influence.

We spoke with the driver who says she found her car today with her purse and cell phone still inside just a street away from where it was stolen.
