COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

An Academy Award winner visited Columbus State University on Wednesday, March 26, for the school's Legacy Celebration Banquet.

Actress Marlee Matlin was the keynote speaker for the event.

"I'm always eager to talk about not letting my deafness get in the way of my dreams," Matlin says in sign language as her interpreter translates. "And so it's important to be able to inspire those who may necessarily need this, and to talk about the experiences that I've had."

The Legacy Celebration Banquet recognizes students at CSU for academic achievements, and awarded individuals who excel at promoting inclusion, cultural awareness, and diversity.

Matlin spoke to guests about including others, and the virtues of maintaining programs and policies that promote diversity. She says her parents made it a priority to make sure she was raised around all kinds of different folks in order to instill in her the value of inclusion and cultural diversity.

In 1986, Matlin won an Oscar for her role as Sara Norman in the film Children of a Lesser God.
