Troy baseball drops game to Alabama in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, FLA. (WSFA) -

The Troy Trojans baseball team fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide 10-5 on Tuesday, in the Cox Diamond Invitational at the Pensacola Bayfront Stadium before a crowd of 5,038.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead as Clay Holcomb recorded his first career home run on the fourth pitch of the game. Alabama would answer the Trojans with a three-run third inning and then a grand slam in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead. The Crimson Tide would add three more runs in the game to pick up the win.

Troy attempted a comeback in the eighth inning as Garrett Pitts and Trevin Hall had consecutive singles to start the inning. One batter later, Jo-El Bennett would bring home Pitts on a single to right field. Nick Masonia would double later in the inning to score both Hall and Bennett to cut the lead to 10-4. A sacrifice fly in the ninth inning by Hall would be all the Trojans could muster in the loss.

William Shell made his first start for the Trojans, and was hit with the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits. Shell would finish with three strikeouts and gave up three walks.

Holcomb, Masonia and Tyler Vaughn led the Trojan offense with two hits each. The Trojans as a team finished with ten hits.

Troy will return to conference play on Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) when they take on Georgia State in Atlanta.
