Dr. Paula Walker with Columbus State University came to the WTVM studio on Tuesday morning, March 25, to discuss the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

"It's a waxy substance that can literally cause plaque to develop in the arteries, and when it forms in the arteries, it impedes blood flow, so it can cause heart attacks and strokes," Walker says.

She says there is good cholesterol called HDL, which can protect there heart; And bad cholesterol called LDL which is harmful.

A good HDL level is 60 or greater, while a good LDL number is less than 100. Combined cholesterol should be less than 200.

To keep cholesterol under control, Walker recommends exercising 30 mins. most days of the week, eating low-fat foods, bake, broil, steam and grill food, and add fiber to your diet.
